Pacific Cycles have announced that the pricing on the larger wheeled IF mode folding cycle will be released soon. It will feature a Schlumpf 2 speed drive which will enable both a cruising and higher geared option. The latest video released by Pacific on youtube really shows the potential of this folding bike.
What is revolutionary about the IF mode? In my opinion a lot of manufacturers tend to concentrate solely on refinements to existing bikes or small incremental and largely conventional upgrades on their annual models. Pacific has a record of implementing more unusual innovations and taking them to the production stage. There is no better example of this than the Pacific Carryme which is arguably the best sub-16" wheel folding bike currently in production. The new IF mode not only has a beautifully simple folding process but produces a very ergonomic and neat package that is easy to wheel along. The IF fold also appears to represent a very tight and compact folding mode which is invaluable for stowing or commuting purposes. Mark Sander's Strida series proved to be a huge niche success and with the backing of Pacific's manufacturing quality and marketing resources, it is very likely the IF series will have an even larger impact.
Up to now, folding bikes have experienced strong growth but they still represent a minority of global sales in the cycling industry. This is simply because the majority of people prefer larger wheeled bikes and the smaller wheeled folding bikes tend to represent a niche. The IF mode makes larger wheeled folders more practical and accessible to a larger audience and could well revolutionise the way consumers think about folders. Up to now, larger wheeled folding bikes have tended to have a clumsier fold, requiring either an allen key to unlock them such as the Dahon Cadenza or wheel removal in the case of the Montague.
Pacific Cycles has had the Reach on display in IF mode in Taiwan. I would love to see the IF bike featured in the video above adapted for the beautifully smooth Shimano Alfine 8 speed hub. In addition the excellent Reach will eventually be available in a more compact and easy fold that makes it more accessible to the commuting segment of the market.

Alloy Wheels For the Motoring Enthusiast
Most motorcycles, cars or trucks now have a selection of alloy wheels to choose from. The materials used in the construction of these wheels may be either magnesium or aluminum alloys and ever more frequently, a combination of both of them. The wheels are much lighter without losing any of their strength. Besides looking good, they are very good conductors of heat.
By using lighter wheels, road handling is improved because the vehicle's unsprung mass is reduced allowing the suspension to sink closer to the road thereby improving tire grip. Quite often, the alloy wheels turn out to be even heavier than the pressed steel type. Fuel consumption can be effectively reduced with a corresponding reduction of the overall weight of a vehicle.
The efficiency of braking systems can be raised by the reduction of heat transference brought about by using alloy compositions under adverse driving conditions. The possibility of brake failure as a result of overheating is therefore greatly reduced.
There is no doubt that these wheels improve a vehicle's appearance, but not only that, their resistance to corrosion allows them to be used in their natural state not requiring paint or covers to improve their aesthetic appeal. They may be designed with bolder, more intricate patterns to make them appeal to a wider customer base. This contrasts sharply with the pressed steel sheet method of manufacture where the components are welded together with no attempts to conceal the welds, making it necessary to paint and cover the wheels with hub caps to improve their appearance.
An alloy, being a combination of metals, is prone to galvanic corrosion as a result of the metals reacting with each other when specific conditions are experienced. If preventative steps are not taken, this could result in air leaking out of the tires. Repairing damaged alloy wheels could prove to be difficult, but it may be cheaper to have them repaired than to replace them because of the cost factor. Depending on how badly damaged the wheel is and how the owner feels, to repair may be the better option.
The alloy wheel costs more to produce than a standard steel pressed wheel, and it is for this reason that they are not fitted as standard equipment on many vehicles. They are often marketed as optional accessories by vehicle dealerships. They are, however, being supplied as standard to a growing list of economy vehicles because they are so popular. They have been fitted as standard to many sports and luxury vehicles with the larger sizes being regarded as a sort of status symbol for the wealthy.
Thieves have homed in on this valuable, exclusive accessory forcing manufacturers to invent various anti theft devices such as the locking wheel nut which needs to be unlocked with a special key in order to remove it. Many wheels are manufactured by the process of casting, but an increasing number are forged. The forged type are generally lighter and stronger but are more expensive than the cast variety.

Coverting my road bike to fixed gear / single speed?
i bought a flip flop wheel. i have an old schwinn that is ideal for conversion. now what? i dont need, but wouldnt mind, a detailed walk through. what i need to know is what kind of parts and tools will i need to turn my bike into a FG/SS? do i need a track cog or lock ring or is that in the flip flop wheel already? what kind of tools do i need? i have the basics; crescent wrench, allen keys. but what do i need; cone wrenches, free whell remover, chain breaker?
also, how much will it cost? given that i already spent $50 on my flip flop wheel, will the total exceed $100?
and is this a job that a novice such as myself could pull off, or would i do best bringing it in to a bike shop?
im in dire need of answers, thankyou very much,
Lee
the wheel already has that built in...all you need now is two 16 or 18 tooth freewheels and put one on each side and your good to rock....consider purchasing some chain tensioners (according to that your bike has horizontal drops which is what you need.)....you'll need a freewheel tool (park's tool I believe is FR-5?) you can get one at your local bike shop for $10 - $15....put on the two freewheels,,,adjust chain tension....tighten axle bolts, and your good to go! Goodluck with it!
