04 pontiac grand prix factory radio removal?
I want to take out my radio but I am worried about breaking the clips off the plastic console trim, especially the ignition switch bezel. I think theres a special tool need for the ignition switch bezel but can I do it with a screwdriver? Any Advice, such as location of the clips, and how to remove the ignition switch bezel with ease (cause right now I dont see any way other than prying it and possibly snapping it in have). I dont want to break anything.
WOW, I'm not the only one out there....we just put in about 20 hours over the weekend installing a new head unit (and headrest monitors, and subs) and I am going to rip it out in the morning...getting the trim off is no biggie, I've had that piece off at least 20 times and haven't broken the clips, a small screwdriver will get the ignition bezel off just fine. HOWEVER, I wouldn't recommend doing it until you know what you are getting into. The wiring harness to the stock radio has a sensor in it, at best buy to buy the adapter it's $100, then you'll have the needed sensor, but you DIC (the little display above the radio) won't ever tell you the date again. Also, if you are going to put in a double din stereo (the same size as the stock one) you'll have to make mounts, no one has a kit for that, they only have kits for the smaller, single din, stereos. Furthermore, unless you have a sony or alpine stereo, your steering wheel controls will not work anymore. If you are doing the install yourself I would recommend just scrapping the whole idea if you don't know A LOT about hat car. The sensor in the harness controls safety features in the car (whatever that means, I am not sure which safety features it controls, I was worried I was gonna turn the car on and get the air bags in my face, but ti didn't happen) as well as your engine diagnostics, so if it isn't hooked up just right and you have your service engine light come on, they won't be able to run the codes to see whats wrong. So from personal experience, I would recommend getting the dash install kit from best buy (or another stereo shop, they were just the cheapest I could find) and buying a single din stereo, and this is what I am going to do to fix mine...I am going to run the stock stereo under my passenger seat so my DIC will still work and just run the speaker wires from there to my new head unit (which will be a single din so I don't have to make mounts for it all over again (plus it was next to impossible to get the wires shoved back in behind it, there isn't a lot of room left behind there). Just know that if you aren't 100% sure what you are doing, you can really mess the car up. While we were in the process of installing over the weekend we had to take it up to best buy to get some extra parts and it ran like crap with all of that unhooked. Good Luck!
