Why would someone choose to used a wrench over a socket?

I am going to buy a mechanics tool set from sears. Trying to figure out which one I want, and I have narrowed it down to two. One set has 283 pieces, and comes with a very nice tool box. The other does not come with a tool box and has almost all the same stuff as the first one, except about 14 more wrenches. They are very close in price, and I am trying to decide whether or not wrenches are often used over sockets? If i have a 1" socket, and an 1" wrench, why would I choose to use a wrench over a socket? They seem to do basically the same thing, though the socket seems easier.
