The Science Behind Paintless Dent Removal
The practice became fairly widespread soon thereafter, thanks primarily to the many benefits of paintless dent removal that still exist today: a nearly flawless surface, no need for harsh chemicals or paint, and the amount of time and money that are saved in the process.
Of course, since those early years, paintless dent removal has come a long way. While the basic science behind the process have remained virtually the same – using specialty tools that “push” at the dent from angles designed to match the curvature of the car's exterior – there are many repair companies that now specialize only in dent removal, giving them more time and energy to devote to the perfection of the craft.
How Paintless Dent Removal Works
The most important part of successful, quality paintless dent repair is having a skilled technician with the right tools. The more specialized the repair shop, the better the chances for having large or troublesome dents and dings repaired without the need for part replacement, fillers, or painting.
The technician must first assess the damage to determine if paintless dent repair is a good fit. Because the metal is “pushed” by the tools, it is important that the damage is accessible and that the technician can reach all the edges of the dent to carefully massage the exterior to its original shape. Working from the outside in, the technician will then progressively decrease the dent until it is virtually undetectable.
The Future of Paintless Dent Removal Technology
While skilled professionals are key, today's cars also contribute to the success of paintless dent removal. Stronger metals and higher-grade paint products are used to make cars now, which means it's easier than ever for technicians to work with the existing car's exterior to achieve a perfect finish. Cars are also being constructed with accessibility in mind, so that technicians are now better able to reach more area on a car's exterior to do the repair work.
As more manufacturers and insurance companies turn to paintless dent removal as a way to repair cars quickly and efficiently, the process will only get better. By finding a mobile paintless dent removal company you trust and with an eye on the latest technologies, you will always have a place to turn to when the inevitable dents and dings appear on your car.

Paintless Dent Removal --- is it safe?
I found a ding on my passenger door and am very upset about it. Took it to the dealer and they want $650+tax to repair it. They also told me that there is a cheaper option which is called paintless dent removal for which they wanted $250+tax.
I went to the yellow pages and found a guy with a mobile van who travels and he can come to my house and look at my car and fix it. He said it is done by inserting a metal tool through the window and try to push the dent out. He will charge in the vicinity of $85.
I was told by others that this procedure is not 100% successful but can yield up to 75% success.
MY QUESTION IS: IS THIS SAFE FOR MY CAR WINDOW, i.e., I am afraid by inserting a metal tool, the window mechanism might be damaged inside. (Honda 2004 Civic).
Thank you.
working with metal is not an exact science. Sometimes the dent pops out perfectly and you cannot tell it is there. Other times the dent pops out perfect, but you can still see the outline of the ding for what ever reason. I had a body shop estimate a dent repair at 350 dollars in 1992 I want home, got a four foot chunk of 4x4 fence post and a 6 lb sledge hammer and pounded the corner of a pointed section of fender over the taillight back out opposite of the way it was pushed in, with me holding the wood and directing a friend to smack the other end. In 45 minutes it looked almost perfect. I went back to the same body shop, and the estimate went to 50 bucks (no paint) The chance you take is that the ding pops out, but there may be a faint outline. I understand your concerns about the window, but no one wants to cause more damage to fix than its worth, so Im sure the person will be careful around the window. Dents are a part of car ownership, I park away from other cars in parking lots because that's where most dents happen. I look at dents kind of like badges of honor because it is very difficult to pwn a car, and not get any dings. Rather than make my wallet slimmer, I learn to live with little ones, after all, I had my sliding door on my van repainted, parked where no onre would hit it, and of course some individual dieing of liver failure for drinking to hard, runs a lawn mower handle into freshly painted door and scratches it. What can you do? stuff happens, that life. give it a week or so, it is going to be a lot less important.

Some types of repair can be safely and conveniently performed at your home or workplace, while others just beg for problems.
