How to Prevent and Fix Leaky Faucets
All of us encounter problems in our households, be it blocked drains and pipes, lose or faulty electrical fittings or the most common of them all, leaky faucets and water fixtures. These issues if left unattended can cause further damage not only to your property but also to your pocket. It is expensive to get a plumber or a contractor to repair things like these and not to mention the hassle and trouble you have to go through till the time it gets fixed.
Most leaky faucets in their initial stages can be fixed or repaired in a matter of minutes. To fix a leaky faucet, you need to get your hands on a few basic tools. Investing in a standard flat head screwdriver and a Phillips screwdriver would be a good idea. In addition, your toolkit should also have an adjustable wrench, a tony knife, a tube of plumbers putty and tape. You should be able to pick up most of these products at a convenience or hardware store at reasonable prices. Make sure you also have a few utility towels and workmans gloves.
It will also be handy to know a little about the type of faucet that you are trying to fix. If you can get information about the manufacturer of the faucet then you might be able to look up information on the internet about its design and construction. This would help you open up the faucet with ease and locate the cause of leak. Plus, you will be more confident about what you are doing if you know what youre dealing with.
Most faucets are shiny and have a metallic finish. While working with a faucet you want to make sure that you dont damage the finish or shine of your fixture. Use a tape to cover the teeth and heads of all your tools with a thin layer. Apply the tape in such a manner to allow the implement to function properly and not slip while being used. A leaky faucet obviously means that you would be working in water. You dont want to get water splattered all over the place, so lay down a few utility towels around the work area.
Put on your gloves before using your tony knife to open any covering over the faucet knobs. When you open the faucet, a retention screw will need to be loosened using either your Phillips or flat head screwdriver. You will then see a big nut that you need to tighten using your adjustable wrench. Put everything back together again and check for leakage. If the leakage is gone, you are good to go.
If you still have leakage, then reopen the knob and this time loosen the nut and remove it from its fixture. You will notice a rubber-o-ring washer. Check to see if its damaged or worn out; if it is, then replace it with a new one. Before reassembling everything, run an abrasive pad along the inside surface of the fixture to dislodge any carbon or residue buildup. Apply some plumbers putty on the threads of the screw and tighten it back on. This should resolve more than ninety percent of all leaky faucets issues. If even this does not work, then it would be best to seek some professional help.

How do I make a homemade phillips head screwdriver?
I know how to make a flat head screwdriver but i need to know how to do phillips heads. It's a school project.
Well Justin use a piece of metal stock approx. 1/4 inch thick cut to desired length then grind down with a dremel tool the shape of a phillips head, I would use a factory made screwdriver and try to duplicate it. Then fashion a wooden handle onto it.
