If you have a serious interest in editing video with a PC, you may have discovered that just any run of the mill computer won't do. Degraded image quality is often the result, with a loss of resolution, and even dropped frames. Professional quality results require a professional quality machine, but the price for one of these can be outrageous.
Don't be discouraged. If you're smart enough to make a movie, then you're smart enough to build your own computer to edit it on, and save as much as $700 to $1000 by doing so.
Usually when you build a computer, you design it around the CPU. This one time, I'll ask you to take a different path. Since what you are going to do is edit video on a machine dedicated to that purpose alone, I want you to first select the editing software package you want to use and work from there.
Let's say the program you prefer is Premiere Pro. Essentially what you'll be aiming to create is a computer that will run Premiere better than any other machine out there. The first step to insure this is to get a capture card dedicated to this software.
By "dedicated", I mean a card whose manufacturer designed it to work specifically with Premiere Pro, one example being the Matrox cards. Often these items will be bundled together, software and card, at a great savings in price. Sometimes, other programs will be thrown in with the bundle, virtually for nothing. They often include a basic 3-D animation program, sound effects, and similar items.
With your software/capture card selection made, you're now ready to return to a more traditional method of parts selection. Which CPU is right for you is your next decision.
Of course, the software you picked will have a minimum recommended processor, but I rather doubt when buying a top quality editing program that you'd want to hamstring it with a slow CPU. Things like rendering effects require your computer to do some heavy duty number crunching. The faster your chip, the quicker the job gets done.
This is one situation where I can recommend a dual core processor, and here's why: let's say you're using a program like Cinelook to make a video clip look like film. Depending on the size of the clip, that can tie up your computer for a long time. But what if you have a 3-D animation, or some other item you need to get done?
With a single core processor, I'd say you'd just have to wait. But with a dual core, it's almost as if you have two computers in one case. You can go ahead with your 3-D project, while your video-to-Cinelook clip gets done at the same time.
To really take advantage of this, you'll need a motherboard with a fast bus. Its processor socket will have to match the CPU you've selected, such as a 775, a 939, or whatever chip type you picked. You'll also have to accommodate the slot your capture card requires. Most of them still use PCI, but some are coming out in the new PCI Express type.
When buying a motherboard, you'll find the very newest and latest models on the market are usually expensive. Boards with many of the same features that came out only a few months before can be found that sell for a fraction of the price. Higher price doesn't equate to better quality. There are bargains to be found if you shop around.
Something special I'd like you to consider is using a pair of hard drives. Have one drive for doing captures and editing, and use the other for storage of clips, stills, and all the other things you'll put in your movie.
In the past, we'd have more than one hard drive because drives were limited in size. Now, one disk can hold what ten did only a few years ago. It would seem that one drive would be plenty.
Yet, there is a good reason for having two drives. The more stuff you crowd onto one drive the slower it gets. If you use your main drive for only captures and editing it stays lean and fast. Your storage drive not only holds the clips you captured, but each day's finished work as well.
If all of this is beginning to sound complex, it really isn't. You can build one of these in an afternoon, if you plan your machine carefully, and have a good how-to book guiding you. As I have told many people "There are only eleven major parts in a computer. All of them either snap together, or plug in. If you can connect just eleven items, then you can build a computer."

Customer Review:
I bought this guy as a birthday present for myself - and it is one of the best things I've ever bought.
I liked the look of the tools and features, as this is provided. I'm especially looking for a) a good knife and 2) a reasonable rod. I have both, and then some of this tool. Key features include knife, pliers, screwdriver (bits), and carabiner / bottle opener.
The Knife - This is a good sharp knife. Even after one year and regular use is still very sharp. My old Multitool had a rather dull knife, it is safe for the sharp edge of the finger could not run and cut the material. This is not in the case of the knife. The best part is that you do not need to use the rod (as in other Multitools open). Snaps firmly and feels good.
To tell the truth, a small incision in the beginning when I was careless with a knife. Often, I will not even know that you cut, I noticed I was bleeding. It is probably the first I had sharp knife, and I quickly learned to appreciate how sharp it is.
Tongs - This was a pleasant surprise. They are very similar to regular pliers. They are not specific shape of the radiator, more generally - what is good in most situations. This head is sharp enough to act a bit like needle nose, but the form will use it sorta like a slip joint. In general, work in a pinch, either as a, but as you know in advance what you need to better capture the right tool.
The cutter works pretty well, although in most cases, I think I prefer the knife. And the section to remove hardly deserves - it's not particularly good, and sometimes I had more luck with just a knife.
Bits - It's nice that both Phillips and flat head bits, tools, they are easy to replace and secure the place. Bits themselves are strong and the dimensions which will probably a large majority of the chance meeting that need sharpening. Using tools such as screwdrivers, however, leaves much to be desired. It works and is better than most Pocket knives / multi-tools, but it is not easy to work with the shape tool. Is it not perfectly flat and has an unusual shape as a screwdriver. It is still a great addition to this tool and adds a great utility. For example, if it really seems like you say in the bathroom and see a light switch plate is loose. You can Skeletool without a screwdriver and turn to download.
Carabiner / bottle opener - both excellent. I trust that the gun in the tool as it is plugged into account. Arm gun has a smooth action and it is not difficult to open - which means that they are not in the way of the bottle opener. Bottle opener is very good. Better than a bottle opener keychain I've used, and it is better than my Swiss Army knife.
"Ergonomics" - dimensions and weight make the unit very easy to carry around. Sometimes it feels a bit big in the pocket (especially if something in your pocket), so can use the belt clip. It is really useful enough to justify me all the time and it is difficult to weight problem.
Sheets can be used right or left handed, but the opening of the knife with one hand right handed use. The way the magazine makes it difficult to come out with one hand using your left hand.
As already mentioned, screwdriver / bit mode is not as comfortable as a rod / use of the sheet. It runs on short rotation / relaxation of the situation, but I do not think about using it for a wider use, unless I had no other choice. It's nice to know that although it may be useful to use it this way, then at least can be.
Finally - the best part of this instrument (for me) is that with great gifts for friends. I suck at thinking gifts, so the gift of the default option, which works great. I bought a few passengers and anyone who has gotten one has been moved. My only problem this year has passed, almost all of my friends is either a gifted or bought one for himself, so I'll have to ponder what to give back.

Always by my side.
Is there even an advantage to getting the CX? I assumed it'd be lighter, but I later checked on Leatherman's site and it shows the weight is the same. At least it looks cool. It's very minimal, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, it pretty much has all I need 95% of the time. Mine didn't come with the serrated knife as pictured, but I'll live. The carabiner is great to hook onto a belt loop instead of having it jingling in your pocket. This way I never lose another Leatherman ever again.

Leatherman Skeletool CX
This is my second skeletool. I went to the holocaust museum in DC and had my old one in my pocket. I ended up putting it in a trash can because of the security there. A big DOH!
I missed my knife so much I ordered one when we got back.
What I like about the knife is the blade access, the pliers and the screwdriver bits. You can use your thumb to flip out the super-sharp knife blade. The pliers are useful as grips and although wouldnt want to use them for heavy duty chores, are sufficient for most daily uses. The changeable bits are nice when you dont have another screwdriver handy.
I am very satisfied with this knife and would order another one. Amazon shipping was quick, efficient.

#1 Multi Tool
I was looking for a tool that suited me most, I didnt want one with all of the useless tools like a saw and a tooth pick, all those tools do is make the multi tool bigger and heavier. This one gives you a knife pliers and a bottle opener, along with a spot where you can attach multiple head bits to. I reccomend that you get a carrying case big enough to fit the tool and all of the extra bits.
I got the tool over a year ago, i have used it for changing out projector bulbs, fixing paintball guns, and picking my fingernails, the only thing you cant really do with it is change a tire since it doesnt have any sockets on it.
Trust me, you should get it unless you plan to cut trees down with it because it doesnt have a saw.

Love Everything About This Tool
I work in retail management so I deal with a lot of loose bolts and nuts on display fixtures, cutting of plastic straps, etc. on a daily basis. I love my Surge but it was too much to carry especially in business casual everyday. So I picked this little jewel up and wow am I impressed with everything from it's design to it's durability. I haven't found much it can't handle and the fact it slides into my pocket discretely is even better. Another factor is how versatile this tool can be. I am a hobby fisherman so I carry this little guy with me and it helps from everything from cutting open a package of new bait to tightening a reel screw. I am so use to carrying this tool that I would feel naked if I left it home. A definite 5 stars for me!

All I Need
I've been carrying a multitool for about a year and a half now, and they were always low quality or too heavy, especially considering I only used the pliers, screwdriver, knife, and bottle opener.
Well, Leatherman provided me with the perfect solution.
The Skeletool CX is a great tool for everyday carrying. I clip it on my belt loop and go, and it'll take care of 95% of anything that's thrown my way.
Although its a bit on the pricey side, compared to its closest competetitor (Gerber Crucial), its hands down superior.
Plus its light, and it looks awesome.

Awesome Pocket Tool
This thing never leaves my side. It's been clipped to my right pocked since the day I got it and I use it almost daily. The entire tool is extremely good quality and the blade was sharp as hell right out of the package. I have sharpened it once and it was very easy.
I have a classic Leatherman multi-tool that I've owned since I was a kid and I have to say that it is much stronger than this tool. However, this tool is designed to be small light and portable, the other one is heavy, dense, and cumbersome to use. Just know that it's not invincible, the pliers aren't designed to hold up to a lot of stress. I went camping last month and tried to use the pliers to bend a small tent stake. Without much force at all, the pliers snapped and one side broke completely off.
Fortunately ALL Leatherman tools have a 50 year warranty and they fixed it for free. I've had two tools repaired through their warranty service and both times have been incredibly pleasant experiences. They are kind and helpful when you call and they send your tool back in like-new condition in no time at all.
I love Leatherman tools and will never buy anything else.

Best Every Day Carry
I love this tool. It's lightweight and has all the necessary tools of its larger multitool counterparts. The knife is amazing quality and holds an edge very well. For those debating between the standard Skeletool and the Skeletool CX I would highly recommend spending the extra money simply for the 154CM steel blade. The screwdriver is very nice although the grip takes a little getting used to because when in the screwdriver position, the far end (the end with the bottle opener/carabiner) is curved. The pliers work fine although I would have liked a a little more real estate on the wire cutters. It's the perfect size to fit in my pocket and the one handed access to the knife in incredibly useful. For someone looking for a good, lightweight EDC that can hold it's own against full sized multitools I'd highly recommend the Skeletool CX.

Sleek and sharp
I have a Charge but this is much lighter and the blade is very sharp. Cool looking -- used the screwdriver -- good enough. The pliers are smaller than the Charge but seem adequate --- haven't really put too much force on them and hope they won't break like someone else reported.
I'd recommend this tool if a blade, smallish pliers and a conveneient scredriver are all that's needed.
Easily sits cliped in jeans pocket although some edges are a little square on presenting a sharp corner on that edge but ends are pretty curved.... solid feel and overall very good.

future technician - snap-on tools... opinions?
I'm going to become a future technician. I was thinking about getting all Snap-on tools, but after seeing it it's too expensive it decide to go for Craftsman...
Do you think Craftsman tools are just as top quality as Snap-on?
Should I just buy tools Snap-on are famous for (scanner, torque wrench...) and Craftsman for the basic tools (sockets, wrenches, etc...)?
How hard is it to reach a representative if a snap-on tool needs a replacement?
and FINALLY what do you think I should do to build up my tool set, or how did you do it?
it would be very difficult to start out with only snap-on tools because of the investment required to purchase the amount of tools you would need to be a mechanic...that being said, you will have to purchase some of your more specialty tools from other manufacturers because craftsman doesn't make them. Consider Matco, Mac, sk, etc. some of them even have the handy little tool truck vendors that will come out to your shop to fix or replace your tools when they break. Snap on also makes a cheaper product line called Blue point. I do recommend snap on scanners they are probably the best made. Its easy to get ahold of your snap on dealer sometimes you get same day service sometimes you get next week service it just depends. You might have to get a loan to finance your beginning tools. I was told when I was getting started that I would need to have atleast 5 to 10 thousand dollars worth of tools just to start.
Adventures in Plumbing
A bit of grief last week as death visited the Kirsch family. Not that it came a surprise, exactly - poor little guy hung by a thread for months, at the end barely eating anything, regurgitating whatever scraps did go down. Still, it's a shock when a vital member of your household dies. So it was that fateful day, when our garbage disposal finally gave up the ghost.
