Upset? Angry? Emotional? We all get that way. It is a natural part of life and sometimes a natural part of the day. Life and events are out of our control and so we all are thrown hurdles to get through, many times unexpectedly. Dealing with what comes along can be complicated. But what you want to avoid is getting behind the wheel when you are emotional, angry or upset.
Many times people let their emotions get the best of them. When you are driving, you have to be able to give it your full attention. The attitude you have is your state of mind at any given moment. Whether that be happy or sad, excited or full of anxiety.
Your state of mind controls how you behave and react to situations. The actions and reactions are a normal part of everyday living and interaction with others. When you are emotional behind the wheel, it can interfere with your ability to think clearly and inadvertently create a mental distraction.
For instance, if you are worried or upset or thinking through a complicated issue while driving, you may not notice your upcoming exit or turn, causing you to miss it or react suddenly. You become an inattentive driver. You may fail to scan the environment ahead or notice debris in the roadway. When you are angry or upset, you may increase your risk taking and pull out in front of another vehicle, cut someone off, or tailgate.
Positive emotions are dangerous too. Even when you've received the best of news there comes a lack of concentration when you get behind the wheel leading to increased reaction times. You can lose your ability to notice what other drivers are doing, anticipate their next moves and determine how you will respond.
Driving when emotions are high can interrupt your ability to process information in the driving environment and incite you to act out your emotions. You can lose your abilty to perform skills that require precise timing to complete. Physically, your body can react in many ways including increases in heart beat and respiration rates and spikes adrenaline levels.
Teens' brains are still developing and are very vulnerable to their emotions and the emotions of others. They usually have less means and independence than they would like, which can increase their frustrations and intensify their emotions.
So what do you do?
- Set a good example and choose not to drive when upset.
- Recognize the role emotions play when driving. Look at examples of other drivers on the roadway who maybe mental distracted and discuss the danger they pose together.
- Examine your and your teenager's emotional make up and discuss coping strategies.
- Identify and predict situations that could cause both positive and negative emotions.
- Ask for a commitment from your teen to delay driving when they are emotional or upset. Get a verbal agreement and include it in your Parent Teen Contract.
What are some coping strategies?
- If you are excited or upset, ask someone else to drive you.
- Give yourself a few minutes and quiet your mind. Close your eyes and take a several deep breaths.
- Remember that you can't control what happens to you, you can only control how you respond to it and many times that determines your ultimate success.
- Separate the actions, reactions and emotions from the people and the situations: John's immature vs. John's acting immature.
- If you can, take a short walk or do some quick exercises to settle your body down.
- Leave a few minutes early to give your self extra time to get to your destination, so you won't be hurried.
If you become upset while you are driving, pull over to a safe place. Take a few minutes, walk around, and breathe deeply. Avoid the risk and avoid the consequences. Drive with a safe attitude.

Consumer Reports' Choice of Upscale Sedans
The ConsumerReports.org has once again embarked in a testing spree this time with the objective of helping consumers in choosing the best upscale sedans available.
Toyota’s luxurious Lexus ES350 and the sporty Infiniti G35 -- though very different from each other have both found their way to the top the Consumer Reports’ upscale sedans ratings. The sedans that were included in the $30,000 to $40,000 range possess diverse blends of luxury and sporty appeal. More stylish models tend to be quieter, spacious, and provide a smoother handling and driving capability. On the other hand sporty models tend to have minimal interior space, ride firmly, and handle more with ease.
Consumer report has made the BMW 3 Series and the G35 as its example for sedans that focused on sporty driving but provides minimal interior space. On the other hand the Lexus ES350 emphasizes not only quietness but also comfort. There are also other sedans like the Acura TL with its top-of-the-line acura exhaust system that offer a good balance of performance, comfort, driving and handling ability.
The high-end V6 versions of the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, and Volkswagen Passat although not included in the upscale segment are likewise commended for their performance and amenities as well as for their low cost.
According to Consumer Reports the good buys for this category include the Acura TL, Audi A4, Lexus IS, and the sporty BMW 3 Series. But for those who want high performance at a lesser cost, the Acura TSX is a great alternative. Another capable sedan is the Cadillac CTS that will soon have a redesign version for 2008. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class despite its being a sporty, agile contender sad to say has proven not quite reliable. It will also have a redesigned version coming in the summer of 2008.
Consumer Reports has chosen the Lincoln MKZ, Lexus ES350, Nissan Maxima, Saab 9-5, Buick Lucerne CXS V8 and of course the rear–and all-wheel-drive versions of the Infiniti G35 for the test it has conducted. All the chosen cars possess features such as heated leather seats, powerful engines, and sunroofs. Likewise, the stability control is a common feature in this class with the exemption of the Lincoln MKZ which does not provide it.
The G35 significantly updated for 2007. The rear-wheel-drive G35 was provided with a sunroof and a power adjustable steering wheel as options. It cost $35,140. The all-wheel-drive G35x that includes a navigation system is priced at $39,400.
For Toyota, its ES which was based on the Camry was also redesigned for 2007 and cost $41,289 and offer optional features that include cooled seats, power adjustable steering column, and navigation system. The Nissan Maxima was also freshened up for 2007 and was given a continuously variable transmission. The Maxima 3.5 SL is equipped with a stability control, memory seats, sunroof, and also a power adjustable steering column. It cost $33,715.
Aside from the change in name the Zephyr now MKZ was given a larger engine for 2007. It was also equipped with a heated and cooled seats, sunroof, and 17-inch wheels. Its price is $32,675 and the least expensive vehicle in the group tested.
The Saab 9-5 2.3T is equipped with an automatic transmission, backup sensors, and xenon headlights resulting to its $38,635 price tag. The Consumer Reports has also tested a top-level Lucerne CXS with a V8 engine which is different from the CXL V6 tested in 2006. The new CXS possess a different type of suspension tuning, stability control, and a set of different tires. Its other options include a remote start, sunroof, park assist, and chrome wheels, heated and cooled seats. It has a base price of $38,935.
And according to Consumer Reports all the group vehicles included in the group has been confirmed reliable basing on their results of their subscribers survey and are therefore recommended to consumers who are searching for quality sedans to purchase.

Can I afford a used Volvo?
I'm looking for a used car on the cheap. Don't have a lot of cash but still want something nice! The sensible choice of course a used Honda or Toyota or maybe Nissan, but my heart yearns for a gorgeous Volvo S40/60/80. I've seen plenty in the $5-6000 (what I've got to spend) range, but my concern is more the cost of keeping it than buying it. I've set aside about $1500 for maintenance the 1st year. Is that enough? I almost bought a used Saab years ago but 2 different mechanics warned of the high cost of ownership (1 was a service manager at a Saab dealership) because of parts cost and fewer mechanics who work on them. Volvo's another Swedish brand like Saab. Is it worth the chance? Anybody with experience with these cars?
whether you can afford a used volvo or not all comes down to the type of volvo you buy and the condition it is in. The last of the old shape s40's are pretty resilient little things. The current shape s40's (2004 onwards)are pretty good also. Early model s60, v70, s80 were a bit dodgy in the front suspension.
The S80 is a barge but if you want comfort it is a goer.
I reckon you could definitely find an s70 or 850 in good shape.
The naturally aspirated engines are probably your best bet for reliability. But that's the case for any manufacturer just because of the stricter servicing requirements for turbo engines.
Stick clear of the old t6 motor. Shithouse is an understatement.
Remember the later the model the more likely it would need genuine repair work due the specialist requirements (eg software, special tools).
Volvo has a good global network/computer system (called VIDA and TIE) which is just about second to none so i can only recommend genuine servicing and repairs based on that fact alone. This would certainly increase running costs but is worth it if you want to give the car every chance to stay in good shape.
If you see a volvo you like take it to a dealer for a check over and get them to pick it to bits before you purchase it. Don't take it to an independent workshop because they won't know what to for.
Goodluck, i hope you get a good volvo
