Need to hang a heavy mirror on a wall...?

I bought a mirror with a wooden frame and wish to hang it on my living room wall. It's quite a heavy mirror but am confused as to whether I should find the stud and use certain materials such as a stud anchor to hang it or if I should be fine using toggle bolts on the drywall. I was told that these toggle bolts are very strong and that it should be no problem if they are used on dry wall.
Also, the frame has nothing on it to hang it from so I purchased some ring hangers to screw them on to the back of the frame but would these be the best things to use? I would greatly appreciate all your suggestions.
If some belief that finding the stud is the way to go, what materials would you recommend?

While you are correct that hanging from the studs is the strongest way to go, they are not always in the correct location to allow this. I have done this many times for people and have found that hollow wall anchors work well.

First of all, attach the ring hangers to the two edges of the mirror about 6-8" below the top of the mirror. Make sure that they are exactly the same distance from the top of the mirror or it will not be level when hung. Next, determine exactly where you want to hang the mirror. Measure from the ceiling to the top of the mirror, then add the distance from the top of the mirror to the top of the ring. This will be the for the height of the wall anchors. Now measure the distance from the center of the left ring to the center of the right ring. This will be the distance needed between the two anchors.

You will want to be exact with these measurements and use a level between the two points for accuracy.

Now you will need 2 - 1/4" x 2" hollow wall anchors as well as two wall hooks. Home Depot sells these as a kit for a couple of dollars. The hooks look like a flat washer with a hook on the edge and a hole in the center. You really don't want to hang the rings on the back of the mirror directly onto the screws as they could fall off. Install the wall anchors, remove the screws and attach the hooks. Once you have done this you're ready to hang the mirror. Have someone help you with this to prevent scratching the wall or dropping it. Now you have a sturdy installation that will not move from vibration or cleaning.
