Dog crates are a great way to kennel your dog whilst you are at work or out for the day. Their main job is to keep your dog safe when there is no-one around to watch them, but it also is a great way of keeping your house from being destroyed whilst you are out at the cinema or on a shopping trip.

It may seem mean to lock your dog in a kennel for a few hours, but it is worth remembering they are a means of protection. There are two types of dog crates to choose from, the plastic kennel and the wire crate. The plastic dog kennels can double up as a travel kennel, which is great for when you are travelling with your pet, as well as for every day use.

A plastic crate is essentially 3 pieces put together, the top piece which has the ventilation holes, the bottom piece which is completely solid and the wire door. They are easy to assemble and the screws are covered by plastic caps, so you don't have to worry about them harming your dog or attracting their attention.

A wire crate is better ventilated than a plastic kennel and they are available with either one door or two. Which you choose is down to personal preference, but it is usually dependent on where you will be putting the kennel as to how many doors you need.

When choosing a crate ensure you pick one that is one and a half times the length of your dog, when they are fully grown. The crate must be big enough for your dog to be able to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably.

Be careful not to make the most common dog crate mistakes, putting your dog in their crate with their collar on. Avoid doing this at all costs, because it carries the risk of your dog strangling itself by getting its collar stuck in the bars.

Backyard Playground Safety - Part 1: Preparing For and Constructing a Safe Playground

Planning for the safety of backyard playground equipment should begin even before the equipment has been purchased and assembled. This article, and the two subsequent articles, will help you as you plan for and create a home playground experience that is safe for the children in your life.

Choosing the optimal location for the new playground equipment:

• Steer clear of sloping or uneven ground. Level ground helps prevent playground equipment from leaning or tilting. 
• Select an area that is away from potentially dangerous obstacles such as trees, low branches and wires, stumps, roots, large rocks, fences, bricks, and concrete. 
• Plan for a safety zone of at least 6 feet around all playground equipment; set aside even more space in front of and behind swings. 
• Be mindful of how you will position any metal or dark-colored slides or surfaces. Placing these out of direct sunlight can help prevent burns on hot, sunny days.

 

Selecting the most fitting protective surface for your play space:

• Grass and dirt are not adequate protection from injuries due to falls.
• Pea gravel, sand, wood chips, and shredded or recycled rubber mulch are a few of the suggested materials used for protective playground surfaces. (More details on the topic of protective playground surfaces is covered in the second article in this series.)

 

Using the right hardware for playground equipment:

• Use the bolts and screws recommended by the manufacturer of your playground equipment. Lock washers or self-locking nuts are essential to prevent bolts from loosening over time.
• Cap any exposed bolts. Exposed bolts can cause serious cuts or entangle loose clothing.
• Close all S hooks so that openings are less than the thickness of a dime.
• All playground equipment hardware should be able to resist corrosion.

 

Preventing tripping hazards:

• Always follow manufacturer instructions for anchoring your playground equipment to the protective playground surface. 
• Watch for exposed anchors, hooks, and bolts, which can cause tripping and other injuries. 
• Bury anchors and all other ground-level hazards under the playground surface, or cover them with protective surfacing.

 

Additional installation guidelines recommended by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC):

• All rungs, steps, posts, and railings should be spaced evenly.
• Openings between rungs, steps, posts, and railings should either be smaller than 3 inches wide or larger than 9 inches so children cannot become stuck. 
• Guard rails or barriers are needed around any platform over 30 inches above the protective playground surface. 
• The entrance area for the slide should not have any gaps or protrusions that could catch or entangle clothing. 
• V-shaped angles that open upward and are less than 55-degrees should be filled with a solid barrier (gusset) because these angles can trap a child's head or neck.

 

Once the playground equipment is ready for use, the following safety guidelines are recommended while children play:

• Bike helmets should never be worn on playground equipment because they cannot pass through some spaces and children can become trapped. Strangulation by the helmet's chinstrap is a potential danger. 
• Ropes, jump ropes, clotheslines, or pet leashes should never be attached to playground equipment because they can be a strangulation hazard. 
• Children who use home playground equipment should be supervised at all times by a parent or other responsible adult.

THE PROBLEM IS NOT CHILD SAFETY LOCKS.
Is there a wire or something disconnected somewhere that i need to reconnect or something? or is it permanently disabled. help would be appreciated.

well if its just like it was you cant open them from the inside anyway... never lost any of my kids it was pretty easy to treach them not to open the door when im driving .. and yes they might be un wire so that they dont open now
