We all get bored with the way we look once in a while. Heck, I can't tell you how many times I've thanked the good spirits of beauty products for the advent of at-home hair dye. I also can't tell you how many times, at the last minute, I have decided I'm just bored with my look, and make a snap decision to just up and change it.

It's a lot easier than you thought. All you need is a little imagination, sometimes a little bit of money, and a good eye, and you can instantly change your look for a better, fresher you.

One of my favorite ways to change up my look a bit is to go to the salon and get highlights. I'm a home hair colorer most of the time, however, when it comes to the delicate and easily botched job of highlighting, I let the professionals take over. I usually will just do my own base brunette color at home from a box, and then a few days later, once that color has set in, I visit my stylist and have her put highlights in.

You can go caramel, blond, reddish, copper, whatever you think might suit your current mood or the theme you're going for. You can go chunkier, skinnier, more natural looking, whatever is fitting both the season and the look you're going for. Highlights and coloring are one of the best ways to feel instantly prettier, more polished, and up to date looking.

Another way you can instantly change your style and even the way your face looks, is to buy a pair of good, natural looking colored contacts. When I say natural, I mean stay away from the ones that make you look like you're wearing a Halloween costume or belong in some sort of supernatural thriller. Instead, opt for the opaque colored contacts that are suitable for all colors of eyes, and make sure that you opt for the right kind if you have very dark eyes naturally, or they may not even look different if your eyes are overpoweringly dark.

Go for the tanner. Yes, I'm writing this in the dead of the winter, but if you want to make yourself look instantly different, like you've just been vacationing, or working out in the sun, for that healthy sun kissed, dewy look, use a great self tanner on you face. Make sure you get your neck too. One of my favorite self tanners for my face is actually in a spray form.

I like this because it's easy to apply, and I don't have to worry about it clogging my pores. I use a makeup sponge to blend it on my face and neck. You wouldn't believe how different you can look with some color. Your complexion looks instantly more perfect and even. Be sure to blend it all the way up into your hairline, so you don't end up with an obvious division between you natural winter pallor and your newly acquired faux tan.

Try out some new hair accessories if you want to make a splash. There are some great new skinny headbands out there that grip to your head like there's no tomorrow. I usually hate cloth headbands because they constantly slip off my head, but these new gripper ones have rubber on the inside, so they grab and grip to your head all day long, and they really are great for when you are having a bad hair day. Women of any age can use these, and they give a natural, youthful, fresh look, and are reminiscent of the sixties hair does since they push your hair up in the back, creating body and lift in the back.

There are also some great hair tools for putting your hair up in different styles. Hairdini, Puffy Pony Tails, Topsy Tails, just to name a few. These are all great ways to achieve an instantly new look for your hair that's easy and cheap.

Try out some different colors in your makeup palette. If you're used to always wearing browns, or you tend toward the more outrageous vibrant colors like purples and blues, try going completely opposite. I know that most people tend to look better in one family of colors, but there are several different hues available now in every family of color, and you can usually find one that suits your complexion if you just pick the right hues.

For example, I used to avoid yellows like the plague. Now, I've found that there are some awesome yellow colors with gold, warm undertones that suit me very well. If you're unsure, visit your department store's makeup counter, and experiment with different colors or have a professional assist you and let them know what your normal color choices are, and that you are looking to shake things up a bit. A good makeup artist will be able to show you tons of options and even new, fun ways to apply it that you may have never thought of.

Women wearing pants

Exceptions

The majority of women in the West today wear pants as opposed to skirts/dresses most of the time. However, there are times when women may prefer to wear a skirt as opposed to a pair of pants, and some women may wear skirts/dresses 100% of the time out of the modern tradition. Some of these reasons include:

Professional appearance

In most professions, it has been accepted for women to wear slacks. With the popularity of the pant suit and other slacks giving the appearance of business attire, in most professions, it is possible for women to wear pants at all times. Many occupations today also allow casual attire or have uniforms that consist of pants. However, there are women who feel that wearing a skirt ensures one is "dressed up" and therefore gives a better impression.

Most women who wear business attire to work will wear pants on some days and skirts on others, with style variance in mind. The activities of the day at work and the outdoor temperature may have an impact on their choice for any particular day.

Formal occasions

Most formal attire for women consist of a dress. Though one-piece dresses have historically been the choice, many two-piece dresses, often modeled like suits, are produced now. In recent years, some formal outfits consisting of slacks have been developed, using the suit design for their basis.

While it is still the norm for wedding gowns to be dresses, clothes worn by other women to weddings and other formal occasions sometimes include pants.

Weather

During warmer weather, many women consider skirts more comfortable than pants, particularly when travelling and in situations where they are required to remain seated for sustained periods. Though shorts are an option for many casual occasions, many women do not feel their needs can be met with a pair of shorts. Shorts may also be inappropriate for some occasions, and a skirt or dress, such as a sundress, may be the best choice. Additionally, some women who feel they look unattractive in shorts may choose a skirt or dress for warmer weather.

Disability

Some women with a disability may find it easier to don or remove a skirt or dress. Since a skirt can be pulled over the head, bending or pulling up is not required. Additionally, those with broken legs do not need to worry about fitting thin pants over a cast, and those of extreme weights may find skirts easier.

Pregnancy

Though maternity pants exist and are very popular, some pregnant women prefer to wear dresses throughout pregnancy that have no waistline.

Religion

In an age where the majority of women at any given time are wearing trousers, there are a number of religions that prohibit women from wearing trousers and require all women and often young girls to wear only skirts or dresses. The reasons behind such beliefs, which vary within each religion and culture, are generally due to modesty laws, which vary in each culture. Religion is the most common reason for a woman never to wear a pair of pants.

Orthodox Jews: Most Orthodox Jewish women are required by religious laws to wear skirts and not trousers. There are two main precepts in Judaism that are the basis for this. One is modesty. In Jewish belief, the space between a woman's legs is considered to be a private area, and therefore, must be covered by a garment. Additionally, there is the Biblical commandment that women must not wear men's clothing and visa versa (Deut. 22:5). Since trousers were originally created as a man's garment, women are therefore forbidden to wear them according to most rabbinical authorities. Though the common requirement is for skirts to be at least knee-length, many Orthodox Jews as a precaution extend the length, wearing only skirts that reach as far down as the ankle. Other Modern Orthodox women will permit even shorter skirts or altogether disregard this practice.

Traditionalist Catholics : On 13 November 866, Pope Nicholas I wrote to King Boris I of Bulgaria: 'Whether you or your women wear or do not wear trousers neither impedes your salvation nor leads to any increase of your virtue' ('sive vos, sive feminae vestrae, sive deponatis, sive induatis femoralia, nec saluti officit, nec ad virtutum vestrarum proficit incrementum' - Patrologia Latina, CXIX, 1002; see here for an English translation of the Pope's reply to the King's enquiry whether, on becoming Christians, Bulgarian women should wear a dress instead of their traditional trousers). Some members of the Society of Saint Pius X have spoken of the preference of women's wearing skirts rather than trousers.

Oneness Pentecostals: Pentecostal women choose to wear skirts because of the Biblical commandment that women must not wear men's clothing .

Mennonites: The basis for skirts in Mennonites is modesty. For this reason, long skirts or dresses covering most of the legs are requiredThey also wear dresses and skirts because they believe men and women should be distinguished from one another.

Scottish highland dancing

In Scottish highland dancing, women don't wear trews, but instead either wear the Aboyne dress (for the national dances) or the kilt-based outfit for the Highland dances. However, tartan trews can be worn by women in the United States.

Laws

In Sudan, Article 152 of the Memorandum to the 1991 Penal Code prohibits the wearing of "obscene outfits" in public. This law has been used to arrest and prosecute women wearing pants. Thirteen women including journalist Lubna al-Hussein were arrested Khartoum in July 2009 for wearing pants; ten of the women pled guilty and were flogged with ten lashes and fined 250 Sudanese pounds apiece. Lubna al-Hussein chose to go to trial to challenge the law. Amidst international protests by human-rights activists, she was convicted and fined 500 Sudanese pounds. She considers herself a good Muslim and asserts "Islam does not say whether a woman can wear trousers or not... It is not about religion, it is about men treating women badly." She wants to change the law on behalf of all the women of Sudan.

Pointe shoe reccomendations?

I have been on pointe for two years and i am currently in russian pointe style endatra. my problem with these shoes is that they don't have a drawstring and i have a narrow foot so they keep slipping off and my teachers think this is a danger for me. They also have a longer vamp and it makes it very hard for my foot to get onto demi pointe, but of course that can be adjusted with keeping the same shoes.

Insight about my dancing: I have a very strong arch for my age (14) so i cant wear Bloch's. My first pair of shoes actually were Bloch's and i snapped the shank.

Does anybody know any shoes that might work for me? or is there a style of Russian shoes that have a drawstring?

You CAN wear Bloch, you just need a shoe with a hard shank. I'm the same way, I'll snap them in half in short of an hour. (Which made me sad, last week I bought a new pair of Alphas for a performance and there was nothing left of them by the end!). Since they were your first pair it's possible you broke the shank from improper handling, and not strictly your feet.

I actually find Bloch make some strong shoes, you just need to be fit for them and request a hard shank.

Stay away from Grishko and Gaynor Minden if you have a strong foot, they'll be awful for you.

Go to a professional quality dance store and schedule a pointe shoe fitting, you're not in the right shoes for your feet. Know how in Harry Potter the wand chose the wizard? Pointe shoes are the same, they pick you.

For now, get clear hockey tape and literally tape your shoe to your foot. Wrap the tape around your arch while you're in a ''relaxed pointe'' position (you don't want to be on full pointe or you'll cut off your circulation when you come down to flat feet). This is a trick I used to use for class. It helps keep your shoes on and also helps you force a gorgeous arch.

Having only been en pointe for two years you shouldn't have such a long vamp. You want a broader toe box, too.

Shoes are a personal choice, of course, but I've never cared for Russian Pointes save for at performances. They're not my first choice of classroom shoe.

Look into Freed of London, a different Bloch, and even Capezio.

EDIT: First poster had good suggestions, but if you have strong feet you do NOT want a 3/4 shank. Your shoes will last five minutes (as mine did in the Alpha). They're hard to explain. You need good strength to use a 3/4 shank, but if you're too strong the shoe won't support you and you'll break it. They're a trial and error kind of shoe. Mine ended in error (this was after buying 5 pairs. Shoulda thought that one through).
