how do i fix my car Oldsmobile cutlass supreme?

i have almost 500,000 miles on this car and now its starting to smoke from the tail pipe,( white smoke) i believe oil is getting into the combustion chamber, i've been told that it means that my piston rings are bad, but how do i fix that problem and how much will it cost me?, ive tried the temporary fix of buying the stop smoke stuff from the auto store but its not working any more, its the only car i have and i need sum help so please answer asap, thank you
by the way, its an 307, 5.0, v8 engine rear wheel drive, automatic,

Replacing piston rings is a very major job; Pull out the engine and remove the pistons and crankshaft. Strip the block and take it to a machinist to be bored and honed and measured for new rings. Have the crankshaft refinished while it's out and have it mic-ed for new bearings. When the machine shop is done, replace all the seals and gaskets and bearings and crankshaft. Fit new rings on the pistons and make sure their end clearance is proper. If the block needed too much boring for the old pistons to still fit, get oversized ones. Have the heads checked by a machinist and have the valves replaced and new seals and guides. Put it all back together with a new waterpump and new oilpump and timing gears and chain, use all new gaskets. Use assembly lube on the bearings. Are you tired of this story? You could get a used engine from a salvage yard for a few hundred instead of a few thousand you'd spend rebuilding and replacing your old engine. You'll still need to pull the old engine and install the new one. If you want a shortcut- and this may not be relief- have a valve job done. That will cut down on the smoke, maybe half.

When you really love a car it's hard to let go, but at 500k miles, you got more than your money's worth.
