How To Replace Wheel Studs
1. When replacing wheel studs, the first thing you need to do is inspect the wheel stud. Use a lift or a jack raise the car and if you're using a jack, secure it with jack stands.
2. Loosen the lug nuts with a lug wrench and remove the wheel.
3. Check the wheel stud to see you if it is loose. Wheel studs are press fitted so if they are loose, you may need to replace them.
4. Also check the stud to see if it is rusty or has corroded. If this is the case you need to replace it.
5. Make sure to check the owner's manual for the car. On some models that have disk brakes, you may have to replace the whole rotor because they don't recommend you replace one stud.
Wheel stud replacement is not always easy because the stud has been on the car for a long time. There is, at times, rust and corrosion built up on the threads that make the removal of the stud difficult. Here are the steps to replace them:
1. The first thing you need to do is use some WD 40 or some other type of lubricant to remove the dirt and corrosion off the stud.
2. Before you remove the stud, measure the distance the stud sticks up from a surface. You will need this measurement when you install the new stud.
3. A stud remover can be used to remove studs. This tool fits over the stud on the outside allowing you to turn the stud counterclockwise to remove it.
4. If you do not have a stud remover, you can use two nuts that are the same thread size and run one nut all way down to the end of the threads on the stud. Start the other nut and run it down until it is on top of the first nut. Place a wrench on the bottom nut and keep it from moving. Put a second wrench on the top nut and tighten it against the bottom nut. The top nut will hold the bottom nut in place. Put a wrench on the bottom nut and turn it counter clockwise. The force causes the stud to unscrew.
5. Check the owner's manual to see if you need to coat the stud. Use thread locking compounds on the studs keep them from getting loose due to the vibration of the vehicle. You might consider an anti-seizing compound to make the stud easier to remove if you need to replace them again.
6. After you have coated the stud start the stud by hand. Make sure it lines up and goes in straight. Use the measurement from the old stud to run it up to the proper depth. Make sure to check the stud to make sure it is tight and secure.
Remember: If your vehicle has disk brakes and you find that you have to replace the whole rotor, check your owner’s manual first.
