My new swimming pool is complete, what type of equipment will I need to keep my investment clean and operating at peak performance? This is a good list of many of the items which should be kept on hand to maintain and service your new investment.
Item #1 - Purchase a GOOD test kit. DO NOT own a cheap, basic water testing kit. Water chemistry is one of the most important items to maintain and must be checked on a regular schedule. High quality testing strips are also now available and are an excellent way to test your water quality on a regular basis.
Item #2 - Purchase a good telescopic pole - Cheap poles bend and break - buy a good quality unit either a 6-12 foot or an 8-16 foot model.
Item #3 - Purchase a good metal backed 18" nylon wall brush, a new swimming pool should be brushed regularly.
Item#4 - Maintain a leaf rake or skimmer for cleaning the surface of the pool. Leaf rakes are a excellent tool that should be kept on hand for pools that have a leaf problem, simple skimmers will work fine for pools that don't have a high dirt situation. High quality skimmers and leaf rakes can be purchased with standard bag material and or fine mesh material.
The first four items are considered a must and should be kept on hand at all times. The following suggestions are optional items which are nice to have available but not always needed.
Item#5 - Vacuum hose - If you do not plan on having an automatic pool cleaner this will be required.
Item#6 - Vacuum head - Once again this would be an optional item if you plan on using an automatic pool cleaner on a regular basis. If purchasing a vacuum cleaner head, choose one that is very flexible and has good quality wheels (concrete pools) or high quality brushed (vinyl liner pools).
Item#6 - Tile brush - Nice item to have to scrub the tile line of a concrete pool or spa.
Item#7 - Hand held or pole mounted stain remover (concrete pools) - Optional item for your tool box to remove unwanted stains and discolorations from concrete pools. Many types are hand held but some do attach to a telescopic pole for easy use.
Item#8 - Various liquid cleaners, tile, surface, deck. There are many brands and styles available to help with keeping your pool and spa clean and sparkling clean.
Item#9 - Automatic Pool Cleaner - There are many different types and styles of automatic pool cleaners available for today's swimming pool. Research all the different models available and make your decision about your need of this piece of equipment.
Item#10 - Sand Vac - Great tool if you have a sand filter installed in your pool system. Empties out a sand filter using a standard garden hose.
Item#11 - High power pressure nozzle - Great to have for high power water rinsing of filter cartridges and filter grids. (Don't forget to keep a high quality garden hose available).
Item#12 - Various tools, screw drivers, pliers
Remember having the right tools available will make your service job much easier. Stay ahead of the maintenance schedule for your pool and you will always have a crystal clear blue sparkling pool and spa to enjoy whenever the moment arises.

The Fulcrum and Lever-cavemen Used It...i've Abused It!
The fulcrum and the lever, first thought to have been used by Cavemen to rotate the stone tires on their "bone-buggy", is as old as our knuckle dragging friend here. In an age of techno-wizardry (not a really a word...yet!) I have decided to use a prehistoric tool to solve a modern problem.
As a Custom Picture Framer I would dread seeing a customer walk through the door with an unstretched canvas. My mind would race with fantasy thoughts of animated canvas pliers nipping at my fingers while a python-like hose slowly coiled around my leg distracting me long enough for the metal-jawed head to deliver it's painful bite. Whoa! Deep breathes...[go to your happy place].
I set out several months ago to solve this problem, after a little therapy, and a pile of contraptions I settled on what I am calling "The Canvas Stretching Machine". Catchy name. It is, for lack of better words, a "fulcrum". The operator is the lever. The mechanical advantage is more than adequate to create an absolutely phenomenal stretch in less than 3 minutes. I am certain that there are some weathered war birds in the "Canvas Stretching Hall of Fame" that will boast they can match or better that time. Good luck! I recently produced 10 (ten) 11 X 14 giclees in exactly 50 minutes, that includes cutting, joining, aligning, stretching, stapling, folding and admiring.
Certainly, there are a number of machines on the market that can perform well, but I have never seen a video that shows the entire process. You never see a video clip that shows how the image was aligned or making the folds. If you are only going to count the time it takes to stretch and staple all 4 sides, then I can do an 8 X 10 in about 30-40 seconds. I am working on making a short video that will show the entire process. I am a little camera shy and I have approached a few actors to portray me in the video. Tom Cruise was going to do it in the interest of science, until I told him he would have to gain 50 pounds. Rachael Hunter was going to do it, not to portray me, but she insisted on wearing clothes. Artists!
I designed the machine to handle gallery wraps; the down side is that it requires 3-3.5" past the image. This is unacceptable for some printers who are trying to minimize the use of canvas. But for those printers that are wasteful or for artists and framers it is an acceptable trade-off. The machine is also able to do a regular stretch; it only requires 1.5" past the edge of the stretcher bar. For those of you that are going to do regular stretching and an occasional gallery wrap, this machine is perfectly suited for you.
I have created a simple website to illustrate the machine and you can view it at www.canvas-stretching-machine.com.
I am anxious to see what other farmers, I meant framers [damn hands], have to say.
The End

I like making things in a bottle, I made a light house,skyscraper,etc.. in a bottle. My skills are getting?
better but I need better quality tools. Long tiny pliers, long alligator clips, Any good web sites with tools I might need? I did invent a tool, I taped a long piece of rubber tubing to my vacuum cleaner hose. I can stick the tubing in the bottle and manipulate tiny pieces and parts. To let go of a piece I simply squeeze the tube and the piece is released. So My question is where can I get quality hobby and craft tools? Thank You!
My Goodness! All links are great!!! Thank you Diann & IROC! I know I can choose only one best answer, but both are excellent! Micro Mark is a great site!
One good site for buying tools for making miniatures is MicroMark:
http://www.micromark.com
Many things can be purchased that work well in regular hardware stores, or in hobby or craft stores, or even made-up at home as you found out, though as well.
(If you're interested in making any of those things, or parts of them, from polymer clay check out some of the pages at my polymer clay "encyclopedia" site dealing with miniatures, structures, "Bottles of Hope," sculpting, kids, etc... link to site just below)
HTH, and have fun!
