Thermostat is a small and neglected part of a car. However, it performs an important function by controlling the temperature of the engine coolant valve. Thus, when it stops functioning, the car engine can get overheated and does not work anymore. Thus, once this thermostat begins to wear out, it should be replaced without much delay.

At first, the radiator cap is to be covered using a thick bath towel and turned, while getting to hear the sound of release of the pressure. When the sound stops, the cap is to be taken out completely. A thermostat looks like a hose, black in color and 2 inches in length, coming out of the top of the radiator. This thing is to be searched for and then the hose is to be unscrewed by a screw driver or pliers and the clamp from the engine is to be taken off. The hose is to be turned around the thermostat cover to loosen it. A bit of coolant may also come out during this time. Now, after loosening the bolts from the thermostat cover using a wrench, the thermostat is to taken out.

The old gasket is to be taken out with a scraper, over the thermostat. Now, with the help of spring mechanism, the new thermostat is to be put down in the engine and gasket sealant is to be applied. This gasket is to be fixed in such a way so that all its bolts are aligned in a straight line.

Now the radiator hose and the thermostat cover are to be replaced with new ones. The n the engine of the car is to be started but only after ensuring that the sealant has dried off completely. The engine should be allowed to reach up to its workable temperature, before taking the car out for a drive. Any sign of leakage, either from the thermostat or from the hose, or seeping of the coolant itself is to be checked for.

How to Replace an Old Damaged, or Leaking Radiator

THE FOLLOWING IS A LIST OF THINGS YOU WILL NEED

(1) A new radiator or a second hand radiator that you can pick up at a good price if you shop around.

(2) New radiator clamps and hoses if needed

(3) Coolant

(4) A screwdriver set

(5) Long nose pliers

WHAT TO DO, STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

(1) Do not attempt to remove the radiator if you believe it may be too hot, Make sure your car is in park and the hand brake is on.

(2) Remove the radiator guard located on top of the radiator with a screwdriver.

(3) Remove the metal radiator clips located on both sides of the radiator.

(4) Undo the radiator cap.

(5) Undo all of the top hoses going to the radiator with a screwdriver. The hose that goes to the over flow will require you to use long nose pliers to get the hose off.

(6) Undo the bottom radiator hose and put a bucket underneath your radiator, then pull the hose off letting all of the coolant spill out into the bucket. Then take all off all of the hoses.

(7) Remove the fan guard that surrounds the radiator.

(8) Slide out the old radiator.

(9) Slide the new radiator down slowly onto the holes so that they line up with the prongs at the bottom of the radiator. If the radiator is in correctly then the radiator should not move around too much.

(10) Replace the radiator fan surround.

(11) Replace the metal radiator clips located on both sides of the radiator.

(12) Connect all the hoses back up to where they where, make sure they are tight so no coolant can leak out.

(13) Replace the radiator guard at the top of the radiator.

(14) Fill the radiator with coolant as much as you can then run the car for a minute and then fill it up again.

By changing a radiator yourself you will save between $50 – $100 dollars, with the money you save by doing this you can buy yourself something nice.

Broken spring clamp on rad hose, whats the best dremel attachment to go at it?

I messed up the spring clamp on my radiator hose when trying to get it off. Pliers won't do the job anymore so I figure I'll get a dremel and saw that effer off, what type of attachment would be best for this?

Repairing a garden hose
Does your garden hose look like a snake digesting a rat? Perhaps it has a small pinhole leak that occasionally spritzes your face. Worse yet, your hose might be leaking massively, wasting gallons of precious water and leaving you with little or no water pressure.
