What is an air flow meter (AFM); how would you recognize it and what does it do?
Did you know that as you press the accelerator to go faster in your car so you allow more air and fuel into the engine. All this takes place under the bonnet or hood but how is it controlled? Well the AFM is an important component in regulating the amount of fuel injected into the engine of a modern car so all modern petrol and diesel engines have an AFM.
As you go faster (press the pedal) the AFM senses that more air is flowing and tells the engine's brain (ECU) which then instructs the injectors to pump more fuel. It's a bit like running faster or up a hill; your brain senses your muscles need more oxygen; your heart rate rises and you breath faster.
Engines with carburettors (remember them?) do not need an AFM because the carb itself regulates the amount of fuel and air going into the engine. So when your engine management panel indicates a fault in the AFM you'll need to find it and replace it. This can often be done without specialist tools and using a bit of 'savvy', common sense and a workshop manual..
Look for the air intake opening to the engine. This is usually plastic, shaped a bit like a small trumpet. Follow it to the air filter and usually you will find the AFM either in the filter box or clipped into the pipework going to the engine.
Most AFMs have a 12 volt (not dangerous) electrical plug into them which is easily disconnected.
What are the different types of MAF used in modern cars and how do they work?
The earlier type of AFM (eg Bosch Jetronic) used a vane or flap inside the meter body; as air passed by it opened the flap. A spring then returned the flap towards closed position when the engine speed slowed down. These vane types are cumbersome and expensive to make. Later types of AFM are often called Air Flow Sensors and work on a hot wire system; air flow (over the wires) is measured by how much current is required to keep one of the wires at a predetermined temperature. Look inside and you can usually see two filaments; these have to be thin to measure accurately the speed at which air is flowing into the engine.
Which companies make air flow meters? Are there pattern copies on the market? Original equipment fitted to European cars is made by companies like Bosch, Siemens and Hella and, yes there are a lot of pattern copies on the market. Depending on your budget you may prefer to fit a genuine replacement.
How will you know if your MAF has failed and what effects will failure have on the performance of your car? The easiest indication is, of course, the malfunction light showing on your dashboard! Generally the car will start but will run erratically and may even cut out, using more fuel and performing poorly.
How easy is it to change the air flow meter yourself?
Fortunately it's an easy job, requiring no special skills or tools. Often the meter is simply clipped into place or held with torx or hexagonal bolts.

Screws usually function as fasteners for mounting and for locking two adjacent cases to protect the inner core of the gadget. Recently screws have evolved and are made of plastic material which is generally used for mounting electronic circuit boards to take advantage of its insulation property.
Screws for that matter don't come as metal or plastic in its classification. They are classified depending on the shape of the slot it has on its head and the thread that it has.
Commonly there are two classifications of screws. We have the wood screw and the metal screw. How do we tell the difference? Metal screws have a pitch with much farther spaces in between them compared to that of the wood screw. Metal screws are used when a hole has been drilled unto the metal surface prior to the installation of the screw. A wood screw is not a screw made out of wood but a screw designed to be attached to a wood. This type of screw has a pitch interval closer than that of a metal screw. It also has a sharp pointed bottom. The installation of wood screws requires the screw to be used as a bit to drill into the wooden surface.
Another classification of screws is the type of head slot it has. The most common type of screws you could find in your neighborhood tool shop is the Phillips screws, Standard Slotted screws, Hex key screws, and the Pozidriv. Other types of heads are the Torx, Robertson, Tri-wing, Torque-set and the Spanner. These screws are commonly used in consumer electronics like televisions, DVD players, digital media players, cellular phones and etc. The reason why companies use these kinds of screw is for security purposes. This is to discourage unauthorized tampering of the gadget because finding the screwdrivers to fit these types of screws are pretty hard and expensive. Having the right tools to open these equipment means that the individual is qualified and experience enough to open such items.
So this is to give you a basic idea of the screw. I suggest that if you might need one, you better bring a sample to the hardware store to have a perfect fit for your need because if screws are installed with the wrong size and type, this could break and crack open your encasement which could mean trouble.

why do i need steel washers for my 360?

after looking at a few videos im thinking its stupid to but a hex screw and use a drill bit to make a new hole..

i've seen videos where they add one steel washer. or 2-3. and i've seen ones where they use the kit,but they don't use steel washers.
so,i want to know "why use steel washers?"
It depends on how much clamping force you want. The thickness of the washers will denote how much force the heatsink will have on the GPU.
The torx bits "T6, T7, & T12" are to remove everything without stripping the original torx heads. If you think that your screwdrivers will do the job, then good luck.
