Have you ever watched an adult Caddisfly as it floated effortlessly in the air by the side of the river, its brownish wings and yellow body dancing in the sunlight, hovering until it lands ever so gently on the water, barely disturbing the surface. Then, out of nowhere, gulp...another meal for a lucky trout! Fly fisherman since the days of old have watched this drama unfold and sought to imitate Mother Nature's perfect dance with artificial flies of their own. This was no simple task, and even today the trout fly fishing gear continues to evolve every year.

Flies

Part of the attraction of fly fishing is the beautiful and intricate flies that have been developed using simple hair, string, and a fishhook. One of the most popular and effective is the Elk Hair Caddis, coming in tan and olive colors with various hook sizes from 12 to 16. Another popular and effective fly is the Royal Trude Fly, it features a down wing and it is effective when stoneflies and caddis flies are buzzing around your fishing location

Rods & Reels

The modern fly rod is generally made out of carbon graphite. They are thin and flexible and come in a variety of sizes starting at #000 for the smallest brook trout. Rods are sized to match the fish you are after and the size and strength of the angler to a smaller degree. More flexible rods, known as "slower" rods, are easier to cast short distances, but the maximum distance they can cast is reduced.

The standard manual fly reel, patented by Charles F. Orvis in 1874, is still in use today. The angler pulls the line off the reel with one hand then casts with the other, using the palm to slow the line when a fish is hooked. Modern fly reels use a disc drag system made of composite materials for light weight and strength. The reels also tend to be larger to reduce "line memory."

I recommend a "combo" rod, reel, and line set for all but the most advance anglers. With a combo you make sure the pieces complement each other and they typically provide good value.

Leaders & Tippet

The leader and tippet is the connection between the fly line and the fly. Fly line connects to leader connects to tippet connects to fly. Do not underestimate the importance of the leader and tippet; they are essential in making the presentation of the fly natural. Long and fine tapered leaders made of monofilament line are preferred for dry fly fishing. Various tippets can be used to fine tune the presentation of the fly.

Watercraft: Pontoon Boats, Kayaks, & Drift Boats

When waders just won't do, you need a watercraft. Pontoon boats are ideal for one or two anglers, and they can easily be loaded into a truck or put on roof by one person. They also are the most stable option, which is important when casting. Kayaks, on the other hand, are much more maneuverable, and in medium to high wind, they may be your only option. Drift boats are really only for fly fishing the big rivers. Drift boats are expensive and require a trailer, but they are very stable, have a large capacity, and can handle moderate river rapids.
