Many people can harken back to the time during WWII when women were seen to come out of the home to fill a need. There was a shortage of labour because men had gone off to war. I have extensive experience in the trades and was successful in that industry but the same can't be said for all women. A lot hinges on other factors included among them is the willingness of the workplace to be welcoming.

How does one measure a welcoming environment? The very obvious way to be welcoming is to share the tricks of the trade. For example in my early days as a fledgling mechanic I depended on my mentors in my apprenticeship to share with me tricks of the trade that would make my day to day work life easier. This of course contributed to productivity. A specific example was one time when I was trying to remove a nut that was rusted on. I could not break it free with the combination wrench I was using and my mentor showed me how to join to wrenches together to create leverage and it was simple once he demonstrated that technique.

Another time I was trying to replace a fuel pump but I didn't know that when I took the fuel pump off, the pushrod fell down into the hole. I struggled to get that thing back into place. My mentor came along and showed me a trick where he took a hacksaw blade and bent it slightly, slipped it gently into the hole and lifted the pushrod slightly thus allowing the fuel pump to be inserted into the slot and under the pushrod where I could then start one of the bolts once the blade was slipped back out. A trick that proved to be time saving for me and it lowered my anxiety level.

I was blessed to have such a good mentor. But imagine what the experience must be like for someone who has a little more difficulty fitting in or can't ask for help. She may have good training, an excellent aptitude for the work but not the right social skills to survive. It is then incumbent upon the employer to find other ways for this new worker to also bear the fruits of the "tricks of the trade" without having too much pressure placed on her especially if she's already experiencing anxiety in the field.

Much can be and has been said about sexual harassment in the workplace and I won't add to it here as I am mainly focusing on that area where knowledge is impacted. Passive aggressive tendencies by those who hold power with power being knowledge must be a practice that is acknowledged and not tolerated. This takes assertive leadership in the trades and for best results, it is preferable that the need to change emerge from within the ranks. People don't like to be told that they're doing something wrong but managers have a responsibility to get rid of adverse effect discrimination.
