Electric and acoustic guitars both have a similar design, although the electric guitar needs to be connected to an amplifier for sound output.

Your choice of guitar depends largely on the type of music you want to play and the kind of sound you want to achieve. However, both instruments have the same design, and if you can play one, you can play the other.

Both are six-string instruments (a bass guitar, on the other hand, only has four strings) and a body, neck and machine heads for tuning. The strings on both guitars are tuned to the same standard tuning. The strings pass through a 'bridge' on the body to the machine heads on the headstock. They are plucked or strummed with a finger or plectrum to produce sound.

The electric guitar is usually solid and has 'pick-ups' situated between the neck and the bridge. These convert the vibrations of the strings into electrical signals and send them to an external amplifier. The acoustic, in contrast, has a large, hollow sound-box, designed to amplify the vibrations of the strings naturally.

Body Shape

The bodies of some electric guitars are contoured for ease and comfort of playing; cutaways on one or both sides give easy access to the higher frets.

Jack Socket

One end (or jack-plug) of a guitar lead is plugged into this socket and the other end into the amplifier.

Bridge

The strings pass over individual 'saddles' - six in this case. These allow for adjustment of tuning.

Tone Control

The tone control is wired between the pick-up and the output socket. It acts as a filter, determining the tone of the guitar. Some guitars have a number of tone controls.

Volume Control

The volume control alters the level of sound output from the pick-ups.

Pick-up Selector Switch

This switch lets you choose which pick-up, or combination of pick-ups, you want to hear, so that different tones can be obtained.

Electric guitars have from one to three pick-ups - one near the neck will sound rounder and softer than one near the bridge, which will be punchy and rich in treble.

Machine Heads

Tuning the machine heads changes the tension of each string and its tuning. Some guitars have three machine heads on either side of the headstock; some six on one side.

Fretboard

The metal frets are hammered into notches in the fretboard. The fretboard is make of a hardwood such as maple or rosewood, and glued onto the face of the neck. The number of frets varies; an acoustic tends to have 20, while an electric has 22 or 24. When first learning the guitar it's advisable to stay within the first eight frets to begin with, before venturing higher.

Dot Markers

The dots set on the fretboard of some guitars are a handy visual guide to fret positions. They are usually found behind the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 12th frets, and often on the upper edge of the fretboard.

Bridge

The wooden bridge, firmly glued to the face of the guitar, has a bone or plastic 'saddle', which the strings pass over.

Machine Heads

Each side of the headstock of an acoustic guitar has three machine heads for tuning.

Sound Hole

The opening lets the sound of the string be amplified by the hollow-box. It is often surrounded by a decorative rosette.

Body Shape

Its curved shape makes the acoustic guitar comfortable to play when seated, letting it rest on your leg. The size and shape of the sound-box produces different tonal properties; the larger, wide-bottomed acoustics tend to have a more bass, booming sound and greater volume.

Internet Explorer Connection Problems?

OK here goes. Not had any problems previously with my connection. Telephone socket to double adapter, phone connected to this. Extention lead to other. Other end of extention approx 5meters long, fitted filter to which my ethernet is connected, no problems! NOW! bought new phone, connected same set up as last time but phone has interference. Only way I seem to be able to resolve the problem is by putting a filter at both ends of the extention lead but this has now made it difficult to load the explorer sign on page, and when I do finally get it to open it seems rather slow and I sometimes loose connection. Tried broadband help at this stage and it tells me that it cannot find a connection/dial tone. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I had a similiar problem not so long back.
Changed the phone to a nice new shiny happy thingy and ........trouble.
I had used the cord that was in place with the old phone , rather than the new one that came in the kit.
new one old one what the hell?
wasn't compatable was it?
Swapped it and everything now works tickety boo
Could this be similiar to your much needed solution????
