Xbox 360 Console - How to Repair Your Xbox 360 Console of RROD

Didn't think it would happen to you did you? Well, unfortunately the Red Ring of Death strikes more Xbox 360 consoles every year. Fortunately though there are several repair techniques on the market for dealing with this Xbox 360 problem. I am only going to discuss the X-Clamp fix in this article. Here are the basic steps.

  1. Remove the faceplate off of the Xbox 360 console case. The top and bottom vents are removed next. There are several recessed clips that need to be released for this to happen.
  2. Lay the case upside down and on the back you will notice 7 small recessed holes. There are tabs there that need to be released as well. Once you have the back separated perform the same process on the front. The case is opened at this point.
  3. The steel chassis will be exposed at this point and 6 torx head screws will be removed to release the chassis from the other half of the case. Remove the eject button and then lift the steel chassis from the case.
  4. Remove the DVD drive, fan shroud and fan. Also remove the power button at this point.
  5. Remove the heat sink screws and motherboard screws. Remove the motherboard from the steel chassis at this point. Use the heatsinks to lift the motherboard.
  6. Remove the X-clamps, Heat sinks, heat sink studs and clean the CPU and GPU.
  7. The next step requires 8 M5 8MM Cheese head screws, 16 #10 Nylon washers 1/16" and some thermal paste. Place thermal paste on the CPU and GPU processors, use the screws and washers to re-attach the heat sinks to the motherboard. Re-install the power button.
  8. Re-install the motherboard into the case. Install the DVD drive and connect. Connect the fan and place one of the fans over the CPU. Tune the Xbox 360 console on and overheat for 20 minutes. Turn off and allow the Xbox 360 console to cool down for 15 minutes. Turn back on and you should get the 4 green lights.
  9. Re-assemble the Xbox 360 console.
  10. Get back to gaming with the best gaming system on the market.

This is an oversimplification of the process but that is it in a nutshell. There are some really good guides on the market that provide pictures and videos of this entire process. I know it sounds kinda complicated but once you watch some videos that explain the X-clamp fix you will see how easy it really is. You can do this fix yourself, save yourself money, time and be back to gaming in no time. Having a guide really helps though. Good luck and good gaming.
