Here's the question of the swimming pool season: How and how often do I need to vacuum my pool?

The answer: Vacuuming should be done as often as you think. Normally, once a week is sufficient. Generally speaking, the more a pool is used the less vacuuming it needs. It's pretty simple. Many pool owners enjoy vacuuming on a nice sunny summer morning . Many of our customers use a good automatic pool cleaner to do this work for them. Even so, a good manual vacuum is good to do once each month.

The "HOW TO" is essentially the same for both In ground and Above ground Pools:

1. If your pool is equipped, be sure that the valve on the suction line coming into the pump is selected for the port (either skimmer or lower suction fitting) you will be using to vacuum.

2. Attach the vacuum hose to the vacuum head (the piece with the brushes or wheels on it). The better quality vac hoses come with a swivel end to prevent tangling of the hose. Be sure that this is the end that is attached to the vac head; if not the system will draw air & not work properly.

3. Make sure the hose is secure (even use a hose clamp if needed) and that the vacuum head is firmly attached to the pole.

4. Place the vacuum head, hose & pole into the deep end of the pool (make sure one end of the pole is sticking out of the water!)

5. Take the UN-attached end of the vac hose & hold it in front of one of the water return fittings. This will fill the hose with water and prevent binding of the pump with air from the hose. You know you've got enough water in the hose when the vacuum head bubbles up to the surface of the pool water.

6. Put your hand over the end of the hose to keep the water IN.

7. Place the skimmer basket adapter (looks like a disc with a nozzle on top) on top of the skimmer basket. Always use a basket to prevent the possible suction of a large object from getting stuck in the skimmer or in the underground line.

8. If vacuuming through a lower suction or dedicated vacuum line without a basket (instead of through the skimmer), use a leaf trap to prevent clogging of the plumbing lines or hoses.

9. After you have placed the hose on the adapter fitting you will probably notice a sudden drop in filter activity. This is normal. The filter system is just readjusting itself to the change in suction. Let it operate for about 30 to 90 seconds. It should automatically bleed any air out of its system and return to normal operation. You'll hear the sound becoming "normal" again.

10. Vacuum away! Remember to brush & vacuum the sides of the pool as well as the bottom. Dirt, biofilm build-up, and algae will settle there as well. And don't forget behind any ladders.

Troubleshooting:

No suction - Either the hose has come off of the basket, the filter has lost its prime (not sucking water) or the hose a leak (make sure you've got the proper end of the hose on the vac head). If you have more than one suction line, be sure you're drawing from the proper one.

Dirty water returning to the pool - If you have a sand filter, DO NOT BACKWASH THE FILTER BEFORE VACUUMING. Backwashing stirs up the sand & prevents good trapping of dirt for several HOURS. In cartridge or DE filters, this rarely happens.

Suction is lost after a couple of minutes -  How dirty is the pool? If it's REALLY dirty, you may be better off vacuuming to direct waste (sand filter) or otherwise vacuuming directly out of the pool by-passing the filter.

Gas Mileage Devices - a Guide to Saving Money at the Gas Pump

Let's face it, with the ever-increasing gas prices and the government's lack of initiative to fund a good replacement energy source, we've been left holding the bag. For this very reason, many people have resorted to conservation and have started using gas mileage devices to lower their overall gas consumption. Here are a few examples of these gas-saving instruments:

1. Vapor Bleed instruments. These types of devices are installed near the engine compartment and bleeds air through a container of water and an anti-freeze mixture. Some examples of these tools include the Atomized Vapor Injector, the SCATPAC Vacuum Vapor Induction System and the Turbo Injection System.

2. Air Bleed Instruments. Similar to the Vapor Bleed devices mentioned above, Air Bleeders bleed air but this time they are injected into the carburetor.

3. Liquid Injection Devices, which add liquid into the fuel and air intake system instead of the combustion chamber.

4. Coolants for Fuel Line Devices. These nifty little devices prepare the fuel before it is entered into the carburetor. The coolant heats the fuel in order to take the load off the exhaust and the electrical system.

5. Ionized Fuel Line Devices. These are specialized devices installed in the fuel line and promote ionization in the fuel, through the use of several dissimilar metals.

6. Carburetor Mixture Enhancers. These gas mileage tools are installed between the intake manifold and the carburetor and do the job of improving the vaporization of the air/fuel mixture.

7. Liquid Mixture Enhancers. These things do the same job as the carburetor mixture enhancer, but are in liquid form and mixed with the fuel.

8. Various Engine Modifications. These are usually done to enhance the efficiencies of the engine, which means they would require less gas for propulsion. Most of these are done on old engines that are worn down because of age.

9. Various Fuel Additives. These types of gas mileage increasing additives vary in purpose and makeup, from liquid oil enhancers to lubricants to coolants, they are all lumped in this category as long as they are added internally to the gas tank.

10. Driving Aid Devices. These are by far the odd part of the bunch. Instead of helping the car increase mileage internally, these devices usually try to modify the driver's habit. For example, a light or sound device that alerts the driver if he is going to fast or suggests a shift in gears. The most expensive types are usually digital devices that also provide warnings for other instances such as leaving the door or the trunk ajar.

There has been much criticism thrown at gas mileage devices due to some manufacturers' claim that they can increase gas mileage by as much as 30%, even though the EPA has tested them and found only 12% to 25% increase in overall gas mileage. Either way, even though these devices were not able to live up to their hype, the 12% mileage increase would still go along way, especially in the long term. Just make sure to assess the total cost of some of the devices, if the savings on gas money will justify their cost.

Can I bleed my ABS brakes with a vacuum pump?

I want to replace the brake fluid in my 2005 Silverado. I have a vacuum pump and can easily assemble a couple of fittings in order to draw the fluid from the bleeder valves. The pump will pull a 30" hard vacuum, but I plan to leave the cap off the master cylinder and add fluid until it runs clear on each wheel cylinder; there won't be too much vacuum on the system at any given time. My question is; will this cause any damage to the ABS system/valves?

If you remove the cover from the master cylinder and open the wheel bleeder screws the brake fluid will run out on it's own.You don't need to worry about flushing the brake fluid on something that new!
