Did you ever wonder who was behind the dark glass in a car? Well while I can't answer your question I can help you achieve the same look.

Dark windows in a car can come that way as standard or a factory option. If your car does not have them now, you can still add a window tint and achieve about the same look.

There are several reasons you might want to do this. Tinted windows have been credited with blocking out up to 80% of the heat caused by the sun. This can give you several advantages. First your car will remain much cooler and second cutting down the sun's rays will help keep your interior lasting longer and fading much less. If your car is cooler and you need less or no air-conditioning you may also save on gas.

If you want tinted windows you have two basic choices. You can have a professional do the work. It will look good, but of course you will be paying for their expertise. The second option is to do it yourself. It's not that difficult, but like anything else you do on your car, you should carefully follow the directions and take your time.

Depending upon the state you live in, you may or may not be able to tint the front and driver's side windows. Many states want the driver and sometimes the front passenger side windows to remain light in color so that nothing is hidden in case a police officer stops the car.

Let's assume that you do want to cover the doors and the rear window. You will need a flat surface to work on, like a table, a flat surface to cut on like a sheet of hard plastic or glass, some spray bottles, a sharp knife like a razor blade or box cutter type tool, liquid soap, paper towels, a squeegee and a heat gun. In addition, you will need some tools to remove the side windows.

The side windows can be taken out of the car to be worked on. However we do not suggest that you try and remove the rear window. This takes some special tools and expertise and is best left to a professional.

The side windows come right out once you have removed all of the trim and hardware surrounding them. Once the glass has been removed place it on the flat surface and clean it with the liquid soap, insuring that you really get it very clean. Lay the tinting film on the glass and carefully cut it out, leaving at least an inch around all sides. The best way is to start from the bottom and roll the film to the top of the window. Using the squeegee or a stiff card carefully working from the center of the window, squeeze out all the air bubbles and excess water between the film and the glass. Use cloth or paper towels to wipe up the excess water. Use the heat gun to flatten out any creases that might be left. Now you can trim just inside the edge of the window by about a 1/8". The tint and window should now be allowed to dry for several hours or better yet over night.

The rear window is the hardest part to apply a tint to. There are a couple of different approaches, but the one that seems to be recommended the most often is to make and use a template. Start inside the car and remove everything you can from the inside of the rear window. This could include protruding speakers, the rear shelf, a brake light and anything else that prevents you from seeing and touching the entire rear window. You now will work outside of the car and you will want to make a template of the rear window. You can use any type of paper that will not absorb water too fast. If you can find a sheet with plastic on one side, it would work the best. Spray the window with water and lay the paper on top of it. Smooth out the paper just as you did on the side window glass. Now trace out a pattern where the rubber gaskets are touching the window.

Lay the paper on the table and carefully lay the tint on top of it. Smooth out any ridges or air that is trapped between the two sheets. This time you will cut about the film about ¼ " larger than the outlined template. Make sure the two sheets do not move apart while you are cutting the film.

Now go in the car and spray the inside of the rear window. Then carefully begin placing the tint on the window. Most people recommend working from the bottom to the top and from the center to the edges. Again, like the side glass, smooth out the tint with the squeegee, getting rid of air bubbles and excess water. Clean up the excess water and using the squeegee or a blunt blade of some type, push the extra film under the inside rubber gasket. Use the heat gun in case there are any creases in the film. Restore all of the parts you removed, and again let the film sit for several hours or better yet over night before touching it.

Step back and admire your job and jingle in your pocket, the extra money you saved.

Aaa and Parents Magazine Present 2007 Best Cars for Families

The American Automobile Association (AAA) and Parents magazine has recently collaborated to determine the vehicles in various market segments to be included in the 2007 list of their Best Cars for Families. Now on its 5th consecutive year, AAA and Parents magazine aim to determine vehicle models (including sedans, economy cars, minivans, sport utility vehicles, and crossover SUVs) that fits the driving characteristics as well as driving needs of families.

AAA and Parents magazine conducted several test drives for more than 100 vehicle models and evaluated them based on various criteria including fuel economy, cargo and luggage space, and safety features like air bags and child safety seats. Moreover, AAA and Parents magazine also considered the crash test results conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and selected the vehicles that earned top ratings in the crash test.

Only 15 vehicle models in five major categories (three vehicles for each category) are included in AAA and Parents magazine's 2007 list of Best Cars for Families. The complete list of the winners will be featured in the April issue of Parents magazine. In addition, brief description of each vehicle is also included as well as the reasons why the reviewers of AAA and Parents magazine included vehicle in the 2007 list of Best Cars for Families.

John Nielsen, Director of AAA Vehicle Acquisition and Consumer Information said:

“Safety, convenience, and lasting value are especially important to parents shopping for a family vehicle. The vehicles on this year’s list provide the whole package – comfort, practicality and performance with options for every family size.”

“We put the vehicles through real-life road tests that include everything from running errands to carpooling, to taking a family vacation. With many parents and children spending several hours per week in the car, it’s important that it’s a safe, happy place for everyone in it.” said Sally Lee, Editor-in-chief of Parents magazine.

For the first time, the Volkswagen Rabbit compact car with quality VW fan blades was included in the 2007 list of Best Cars for Families for the economy cars category. According to the reviewers, the VW Rabbit made it to the list because of "modern features including advanced frontal, side-impact, and side-curtain air bags standard, along with antilock brakes and stability control. The audio system has a jack for MP3 players and the handy hatchback makes for simpler loading."

Meanwhile, here are the 15 winners of AAA and Parents magazine's 2007 Best Cars for Families along with their respective categories. Sedans - Honda Accord, Mercury Milan, Toyota Camry; Crossovers - Dodge Caliber Ford Edge Toyota RAV4; SUVs - Chevy Tahoe, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe; Minivans - Honda Odyssey, Hyundai Entourage, Toyota Sienna; Economy - Honda Civic, Mazda 3, Volkswagen Rabbit.
