If you are interested in water heater installation you will find that it isn't a difficult task but that there are a lot of things to consider before you can even buy a new heater. There are several different types of water heaters and each has different power requirements and uses different fuels. If you are using a great deal of hot water for things like dishwashers or even a hot tub you need to consider a heavy duty heater and possibly new electrical breakers to handle the increased load on your homes electrical system. Gas heaters are usually more cost efficient but some areas do not offer gas service and supply needs to be considered also.
Follow the six simple steps below and your new heater will be installed correctly.
1. The job itself requires only a few simple hand tools and can be completed in just a couple of hours at most. Turn off the power and gas if you have a gas heater to the old heater and disconnect the intake, output and main water lines, the electrical connections and the gas lines. Place the new heater in it's place and use a level to ensure that the heater is correctly seated in position.
2. The cold water supply pipe has a shut off valve that should be sweat soldered to prevent leaks. The cold and hot water heat trap fittings should have thread tape, or Teflon® tape and pipe compound on the threads to further guard against leaks which will damage your heater. Each line is color coded red for hot water and blue for cold water so confusion can be easily avoided. Once the fittings are in place, tighten them with a Crescent wrench to assure they are firmly in place. Do not put to much pressure on the threads or they can be damaged, leading to leaks.
3. When you are connecting your water supply keep in mind that most codes require that flexible fitting be used, especially in areas prone to earthquakes. Connect the water supply pipe to your heater, turn off the main valve and open all the valves in the heater. Now run all of the faucets in the house to purge all of the air from the system.
4. Now it is time to connect the power to your water heater. Remove the cover plate and connect the power supply. There should be only three wires to connect and they will probably be color coded, at least on the heater. You will have a hot, a neutral and a ground wire. The ground wire should be connected to the frame of the heater and the two other wires to their respective posts. Follow the instructions carefully. You should be provided with a wiring diagram and it should be followed precisely for safety reasons.
Installing water is a simple task but if you have any doubt that you can do it, it is always best to call in a certified plumber to get the job done correctly.

Tool Kit Essentials: 10 Tools You Should Have
Occasionally, every homeowner is required to do small fix-it job around their home. Not every homeowner is a full-fledged "handyman," but it’s still important to have a small tool kit that is clean, organized, and in a good state of repair. Here are the top 10 tools that every homeowner's tool kit ought to contain:
1. Hammer
A hammer is required to drive brads or nails. Hammers come in various sizes, generally sized by ounces of the head. A 12 ounce hammer is fairly light and will drive a brad for hanging a picture, but if you have nail that needs to be driven into a piece of wood, a 16 ounce hammer is much more useful.
2. Flat Head Screwdriver
You'll need one with a mid-range slot about 1/4 inch across the head. The end of the screwdriver should be good and square for safety reasons. If you can afford it, purchase a small set of 3 or 4 different size screwdrivers.
3. Philips Head Screwdriver
For the average homeowner, a #2 point screwdriver will be most useful because it will fit the majority of screws. If using an older screwdriver, be sure to inspect the condition of the tip. It should have good, crisp points.
4. Adjustable Wrench
An adjustable wrench (often incorrectly referred to as a crescent wrench) is a critical part of any tool kit. It fits square and hex nuts ranging from 1/4 inch usually up to 1 inch. If you wish, you can also purchase an adjustable wrench that will fit nuts larger than 1 inch across.
5. Slip Joint Pliers
The hole in one side of a pair of slip joint pliers will look like a figure 8. This is so the pliers can accommodate two different sizes of grips, small and large. Remember that if you use a pair of pliers to hold or turn a tap, it's important to first get a very good grip. If the pliers slip, the head of the tap or nut will be damaged and a wrench will never fit it again.
6. Alligator Pliers
This tool is often found in a plumber's tool kit, but can be useful for the average homeowner, as well. Alligator pliers allow you to grasp larger items, usually ranging from 1/4 inch up to perhaps 1-1/2 inches square.
7. Scissors
Every homeowner's tool kit should have one set of good quality scissors.
8. Side Cutters
Side cutters look like a pair of pliers with cutter jaws. They will cut through rope or metal wire much easier than scissors will.
9. Tape Assortment
An assortment of different tapes will also come in handy. Some good types to include are duct tape, masking tape, and clear packing tape.
10. Hardware Kit
A small hardware kit is a critical part of your tool kit, and can be easily purchased at most hardware stores. A hardware kit will contain an assortment of items: brads for hanging pictures and taps, nuts and bolts, wood screws, and even some sheet metal screws for repairing many household items.
Your homeowner’s tool kit can be as small as the items listed above or large as you want it to be. Many homeowners begin with the items listed above, and then allow their tool kit to grow naturally over time. Whatever size tool kit you have, if it contains these 10 essential items, you'll be ready for most small repair jobs around your home.

What would be the best travel tool kit composition?
I'm going cross country in my Jeep, and would like to put together the most necessary tools to put into my spare tire compartment for emergencies...what would the best assembly of tools be to fit inside this small space...just list the most important tools for me that I may not have thought of..
I have
small adjustable crescent wrench
assorted socket set
screwdrivers
jumper cables
Awesome... if you have an older jeep with a distributor I wud take an extra cap and rotor button, if it's a newer jeep get some electrical contact cleaner. If you have an automatic take some trans fluid. I would check all ur belts before you go and grease all you bearing and repack your wheel bearings... also have tires balance. Jeeps are famous for cupping tires as you tend to nock them out of balance often. I also recomend getting a garmond handheld GPS so you always know where you are even when ur off road. I have a wrangler, cheeroke, and an old commanche p/u. I love jeeps. You 'll have a blast. BTW if you have a soft top and plan on riding without your shirt... use sunscreen cuz I got a slash mark onetime from the seat belt...
